Jane Grigger (Griggs) – Hagan 1965-1969

Griggs thenA HAGAN REMEMBRANCE

There is a place that we hold dear, it’s not too far, it’s just down the road from here.

Each summer along the Delaware, our parents sent us, they thought, to get some fresh air.

But, oh, we gained so much more than that, and now it’s why we’re where we’re at. (having this chat)

Camp offered volleyball and boating and canoeing and box hockey; arts & crafts, religion, and swimming from a beach that was rocky.

Singing was a signature event; we sang around the council fire, in Great Hall, at the outdoor theatre & chapel, and even in a tent.

A day began with Reveille and flag raising, and ended (for the campers) with Taps, not played live on a bugle, but over the Rat Trap P.A. system on a record with a scratch.

You could progress from camper to CIT to JC to counselor to Department Head, no wonder one of our favorite songs is “We’re Hagan Born, We’re Hagan Bred.”

And now we’re back for our 50th reunion, give or take a year, in that place that we hold so dear.

But, of course, it’s not just the God-given mountain and riverside setting, it’s the fond memories of friends from long ago who did our aiding and abetting.

We continue to apply lessons learned at Hagan as we go about our daily routine, and it seems as if it were just yesterday that we stood in triangular formation, in front of Great Hall, on that beautiful campus of green!

But let there be no mistaking our reverence for this place, for when our thoughts turn to those carefree days of the 60’s, it still puts a smile on our face.
